The Gulfstream G200 is a luxurious super-midsize jet, designed to create a sense of space and comfort during short hops or long-range transcontinental flights.

About this aircraft

• Originally named the Astra Galaxy, the Gulfstream G200 was first delivered in 1999. Around 250 were built before production ceased in 2011.
• The aircraft can easily complete non-stop flights such as London to New York and Dubai to Singapore.
• The vast majority of G200s seat 8-11 passengers. A further passenger can be seated in the enclosed lavatory if required.
• The aircraft’s external baggage compartment can hold up to 10 suitcases.
• In 2005, Gulfstream began designing a follow-on aircraft. The new model, originally known as the G250, launched in 2008 and was later renamed the G280.

The Gulfstream G200 is one of the fastest and longest-range super-midsize jets. The upgraded G280 builds on the 200’s success with new engines, wings and interiors to compete against the popular Bombardier Challenger 300 and Cessna Citation X.

Interior design

The G200’s spacious cabin is larger than many of its competitors. It can be designed in a variety of ways, but the three most common configurations feature two club sections with four seats each; a large club with conference seating and a divan; or a club section with another half club opposite the divan. There’s a radio phone and an entertainment system on board, as well as power outlets for each passenger.

Interesting facts to know before you fly

• Gulfstream’s large signature cabin windows have a sleek oval shape, allowing an abundance of natural light to enter the cabin during flight. They’re also positioned so passengers can see the world below from the comfort of their seats.
• There’s an additional 25 ft³ of storage space for hand luggage inside the cabin.
• The G200 has an excellent climate control system, which allows the climate in the cabin and cockpit to be adjusted separately. Fresh air is pumped continuously into the cabin, rather than recirculating.

Technological features

Dual Pratt and Whitney engines power the Gulfstream G200, each delivering 6,040 lbs of thrust.

Inside, the Collins ProLine 4 avionics suite is displayed across five screens in the cockpit. Digital autopilot, dual ARINC 429 ProLine radios, an AlliedSignal GNS-X/EX flight management system, a digital air data and heading reference system, and a WXR-840 solid-state weather radar computer are also included.

History

Originally named the Astra Galaxy, the G200 was designed in the late 1980s by Galaxy Aerospace in a risk-sharing partnership with Soviet aircraft design bureau Yakovlev OKB. The program was officially launched in 1993.

Powered by new Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306 turbofans, the aircraft featured wings from the existing Astra SPX with added integrated winglets and modified high lift devices. Inside, it had improved ProLine 4 avionics and an all-new interior.

The Galaxy first flew on December 25, 1997. By December 1998 it had received certification from the US and Israel and deliveries began the following year. The Galaxy was renamed the G200 after Gulfstream acquired Galaxy Aerospace in June 2001. Gulfstream built 250 of the aircraft over the next 10 years, before production ceased in 2011.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation is an American aircraft company based in Savannah, Georgia and a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Dynamics. The company originated in the late 1950s when Grumman Aircraft Engineering Co. developed a twin-turboprop business aircraft called the Grumman Gulfstream I (G-I) at its facilities in Bethpage, New York.

Gulfstream now designs, develops, manufactures, markets and services the latest business jet aircraft and has produced more than 2,000 aircraft since 1958.
