Bali prepares to welcome tourists from October
The popular Indonesian island of Bali is expected to reopen to tourism from October, if COVID-19 infection rates stay low. Around 6.3 million international travellers visited Bali in 2019 and the island relies heavily on tourism.
According to a statement from the secretary of the ministry, Ni Wayan Giri Adnyani, Bali will follow destinations including the Riau Islands and Yogyakarta on the island of Java. It is not yet known what the arrival requirements will be if restrictions are lifted in October, or whether Bali will open to countries with high cases of COVID-19. Tourism officials have been calling for a ‘travel bubble’ between Bali and Australia.
Currently, only diplomats, permanent residents and humanitarian workers are permitted to enter Indonesia. Anyone entering the country must take a swab test and provide proof of a negative COVID-19 certificate.
Bali has had around 1,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 11 deaths.
